Velma Adalene Turner

January 11, 1924 ~ June 11, 2019 (age 95) 95 Years Old

Tribute

Velma Adalene (Davidson) Turner was born in Oklahoma on January 11, 1924 to Bert and Ida Davidson. She attended Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, graduating in 1941.
Velma married Leonard Matthews “LM” Turner in Tulsa on September 5, 1947. Velma and LM had two children, fraternal twins Cartha Lynn and Claude Leonard Turner on June 2, 1948.
The Turners moved to Arizona about 1952 where LM found employment and eventually began working in the mining industry. The family lived in Tucson and San Manuel, Arizona while their children attended school. LM worked for TriCo Electric and Magma Copper Company while Velma was employed by Arizona Water Company. Velma’s excellent clerical skills ensured that she would have employment wherever they lived, and whenever she wanted. Early in her career she worked for an engineering firm and for the US Post Office both in Tulsa.
After Cartha and Leonard left home and finished college, Velma and LM followed copper mining opportunities, moving first to Casa Grande (where Velma was a school office manager), then to Queen Valley, and finally to Tucson, all in Arizona.
When the copper mining in Arizona began to decline, they moved to Grants, New Mexico where Velma worked for Johnny M Mine, and LM found employment with Gulf Oil in the uranium mining industry. That industry, too, declined after a few short years. Looking for a more stable industry their next move, before retirement, was to Pittsburg, California where Velma worked for Aetna Life Insurance and LM was employed by Pacific Gas and Electric.
In 1986, Velma and LM retired and moved to Cadiz, Kentucky, near where LM had many relatives. Both were active in the community until LM’s death in 2007. Velma remained active until her eyesight failed necessitating a move to assisted living at the Barkley Plantation in Cadiz.
Velma was active in outdoor pursuits such as hiking, bicycling, and just walking. She always kept in top physical shape and ensured that her mind was engaged. Her other activities were sewing, reading, quilting, jigsaw puzzling, Church attendance and functions.
Preceding Velma in death were her parents Bert and Ida, her husband LM, her sister Shirley and her son Leonard. Velma is survived by her daughter Cartha (of San Dimas, California), grandchildren Melissa Tennille (Tacoma), Erin Tennille (Seattle), James Turner and April Turner (both of Goose Creek, South Carolina). Velma has two great grandchildren, Maya and Emma Ovink (Goose Creek).
