Mr. Roger Gayle Sweeney age 70 of Sharon Grove, KY passed away Thursday October 11, 2018 10:25 a.m. at his residence of natural causes. Services will be Sunday October 14, 2018 2:00 p.m. at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton, KY with Rev. David Goldman, Rev. John Ford and Rev. Don Garrett officiating. Burial will follow in the Gant Cemetery in Sharon Grove, KY. Visitation will be Saturday October 13, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Latham Funeral Home.
Mr. Sweeney was born in Greenville, KY April 1, 1948. He was a graduate of Muhlenberg Central High School and attended Lindsey Wilson College and graduated from Trevecca Nazarene College earning a bachelor’s degree in music. Roger was employed a number of years at ARDCO in Elkton and retired from Haley’s Hardware in 2013, after retirement he took a position with Latham Funeral Home. Roger was a U.S. Army veteran, Kentucky Colonel, and a member of the Elkton Church of the Nazarene where he served as song leader for 45 years and was secretary of the church board. He is preceded in death by his parents Marvin Sweeney and Mary Francis “Carmie” McGregor Sweeney.
Roger loved to hunt and fish, but his first love was his family and singing southern gospel music. He and his wife Euleta were song evangelists with the Church of the Nazarene for 10 years in the 1970’s and 1980’s. In addition to singing with the Sweeney family, he was a first tenor singer in various quartets including the Brotherhood Quartet from Campbellsville, KY, Southern Sound Quartet from Nashville,TN, and has sung with the Conquerors Quartet from Evansville, IN for the past 12 years.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years Euleta Gayle Sweeney of Sharon Grove, KY, his son James Anthony and his wife Meledee Sweeney of Ocala, FL, his daughters Euleta Latrice and her husband John Ford of Vivian, LA, and Amanda Gayle and her husband Brandon Bassingthwaite of Elkton, KY, his brother James Lawrence and his wife Doreen Sweeney of Rosewood, KY, his sisters Margaret Finley of Hobart, IN and Mary and her husband Glenn White of Hobart, IN, 6 grandchildren J.R. Ford, Zack Ford, Jordan Land, Jerad Land, Joshua Sweeney and Jameson Sweeney.
